Steps to Apply for an Internship in Washington, DC

 

First, talk with your academic advisor.  Evaluate your coursework and experience to see if you are prepared for an internship. You should at least be a sophomore (junior is preferred) and have at least a 2.75 GPA.

Second, contact the Director of the Truman in Washington Program, Dr. Jay Self.  Set up an appointment to discuss the possibilities and logistics of interning in Washington, DC.  You may want to do this as early as a year ahead of the term you want to be in Washington.

Third, research and identify potential programs or opportunities. Think about what kind of work you would like to do.  Be sure to cast a wide net when doing this.  Think about the variety of possible jobs available to interns.  If you need help, you can see the past internships Truman students have completed, or you can visit The Washington Center website.

Fourth, decide if you want your internship experience to count for academic credit. There are three types of internship opportunities.  Keep in mind that some internships require that you do them for credit.

Fifth, look into the cost and how your financial aid package might apply if you are doing the internship for credit.

Lastly, complete the appropriate application and interview processes.  For an internship through The Washington Center, the TWP has its own application and interview process.  If you want to complete an internship for departmental credit, talk to your academic advisor about how your home department handles that process.
