Types of Internships
There are three different types of internship opportunities available to you. It is up to you to decide which of these is best suited for your needs.
1. The Washington Center Internship
- The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars provides assistance in locating an internship placement.
- You will be assigned a program advisor through The Washington Center to assist you during your time in DC.
- 11 credit hours are available during the summer term. 12 credit hours during the fall and spring terms.
- You will take an academic course (meets one evening a week) during your internship.
- You are required to pay an application fee, the Washington Center’s program fee, the Washington Center’s housing fee (if you use their housing), and a $350 fee to Truman.
- Attend the President’s Lecture Series – presentations from distinguished leaders.
- Meet with Capitol Hill policymakers.
- Develop a Civic Engagement Project.
- Complete an internship portfolio. Components include a statement of learning objectives, resume, internship defense letter, analyses of lectures, informational interviews, and other writing or work assignments.
2. An Internship For Academic Credit
- You will find internship opportunities on your own and/or with the help of the TWP.
- You are responsible for paying for the cost of academic credit through Truman. Arrangements must also be made with your academic advisor and department.
- You must locate housing options on your own and/or with the help of the TWP.
3. A Non-Credit Internship
- You will find internship opportunities on your own and/or with the help of the TWP.
- You must locate housing options on your own and/or with the help of the TWP.
